Did you know that emergency planning is an important โ and sometimes overlooked โ part of your NDIS supports? ๐งก
National Disability Services (NDS) recently published clarifications on some common NDIS questions, including one that’s really relevant for participants and their families: who is responsible for helping create a Personal Emergency Plan?
According to the NDS, support coordinators โ the people who help participants connect with and manage their supports โ are not automatically required to write a Personal Emergency Plan on your behalf. However, they are expected to have conversations with you about emergency planning and help make sure a plan is in place with the right providers.
This means if you are an NDIS participant, it’s worth asking: Does someone in my support team know what to do in an emergency? Is there a plan in place โ and do the people supporting me know about it? Emergency planning can cover things like what happens during a natural disaster, a power outage, or if your regular supports are suddenly unavailable.
If you’re unsure whether your emergency planning needs are being addressed, that’s a great conversation to have with your support coordinator, your allied health team, or your NDIS planner.
At Care For Welfare, our team is always happy to talk through how we can support you within your NDIS goals โ including helping you connect with the right people. ๐
