Have you ever wondered what questions come up most often in the NDIS sector — and what the answers mean for you?

National Disability Services (NDS) publishes a regular summary of the top questions raised by disability support providers. The April 2026 edition covered two topics that are worth understanding if you or someone you support receives NDIS-funded services.

First, the question of shadow shifts in Supported Independent Living (SIL). SIL is a type of NDIS-funded support that helps people with disability live as independently as possible, often in shared accommodation. According to NDIA guidance reported by NDS, the cost of shadow shifts — where a new staff member works alongside an experienced one to learn the role — is already included in the standard SIL hourly rate. This means providers should not be charging separately for this.

Second, emergency planning for support coordinators. Support coordination is a service that helps NDIS participants understand and use their plan effectively. NDS has clarified that because support coordination is usually delivered remotely, coordinators are not expected to personally create a participant’s emergency plan. However, they are expected to discuss emergency planning with participants and help make sure a plan is in place with the right providers.

Knowing how your supports are meant to work — and what providers can and cannot charge — helps you feel more confident in your NDIS journey. If you have questions about how your therapy supports fit within your NDIS plan, we’re always happy to have a chat.

General information only. Not personal advice. Speak with your NDIS planner, support coordinator, or allied health provider for advice specific to your situation.
