Did you know there have been some important NDIS clarifications this month that could affect how your supports are delivered? 👇
National Disability Services (NDS) recently published its April 2026 Helpdesk update, which included two key clarifications from the sector. First, regarding Supported Independent Living (SIL) — that’s funded support for people who need help at home — the NDIA has indicated that the cost of shadow shifts (where a new support worker observes before working independently) is already included in the standard SIL hourly rate. This means providers are not able to charge separately for shadow shifts.
The update also touched on emergency planning and support coordinators. Support coordinators — the people who help participants connect with and manage their supports — are generally not expected to write a personal emergency plan on a participant’s behalf. However, they are encouraged to discuss emergency planning with participants and help make sure a plan is in place with the right providers.
As an NDIS participant or family member, it’s helpful to understand how your supports are structured and what your providers are responsible for. If you have questions about your current supports or how occupational therapy (OT) may fit into your goals, we’re here to help.
General information only. Not personal advice. Speak with your NDIS planner, support coordinator, or allied health provider for advice specific to your situation.
