A few NDIS questions keep coming up right now — and the answers matter for participants, families, and support coordinators alike. 👇

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has indicated that the cost of shadow shifts — where a new support worker observes an experienced worker before taking on a role — is already factored into the Supported Independent Living (SIL) hourly rate. According to NDIA guidance, providers cannot charge additional amounts for these shifts. National Disability Services (NDS) has noted it is seeking further confirmation from the NDIA on this point.

Another common question is about emergency planning. Support coordinators — the people who help NDIS participants connect with services and navigate their plans — are generally not expected to personally create a participant’s emergency plan, particularly because support coordination is often delivered remotely. However, they do play an important role in having conversations with participants about emergency preparedness and making sure relevant providers have a plan in place.

And with Anzac Day coming up, it’s a good reminder that public holiday arrangements can affect when and how services are delivered. If you have questions about how upcoming public holidays may affect your supports, it’s worth checking in with your provider or support coordinator ahead of time.

General information only. Not personal advice. Speak with your NDIS planner, support coordinator, or allied health provider for advice specific to your situation.
