There is a lot of conversation in the sector right now about the Federal Government’s Thriving Kids initiative — a proposed model that would see states and territories take on greater responsibility for developmental assessment and early childhood support, particularly for children with mild to moderate developmental concerns.

For families already working with an OT, the honest answer is: we are watching this closely, and the details still matter.

What we do know is that early support works best when it is consistent, familiar, and built into the routines a child already lives in — at home, at kindy, at school. A child learning to manage a pencil grip or regulate in a noisy classroom does not benefit from starting over with a new face every few months. The relationship between a child and their therapist is part of the work.

However this policy develops, our commitment stays the same: one therapist, the same child, the same family, session after session. That does not change with a policy announcement.

If you have questions about what Thriving Kids might mean for your family’s current supports, your NDIS planner or support coordinator is the right place to start — they will have the most current information for your situation.
